Boost your child's early reading skills

by Lisa Hoover

Hello !

Summer is the perfect time to encourage your child's love of reading and help them build strong early literacy skills. With just a few simple activities and resources, you can create a fun and engaging learning environment at home that fosters your child's imagination and curiosity. In this newsletter, we'll share some creative and effective ways to support your child's literacy development and make reading a part of your daily routine.

1. Read, Read, Read: Reading aloud to your child every day is one of the most effective ways to build their early literacy skills and encourage a love of books. Choose books that are age-appropriate and that your child enjoys. Take turns reading and ask questions to check for understanding and to promote discussion.

2. Make Reading a Game: Turn reading into a fun and engaging activity by playing games like "I Spy" or creating a scavenger hunt with books. Choose a theme or category, like animals or sports, and have your child find books that fit the theme. This activity promotes letter recognition, vocabulary development, and critical thinking.

3. Write and Illustrate a Story: Encourage your child to create their own stories by writing and illustrating a book. This activity promotes creativity, language development, and storytelling skills. You can use household items like paper, markers, and stickers to create a book-making kit.

4. Build Vocabulary: Expand your child's vocabulary by playing word games like Scrabble or Boggle. These games promote letter recognition, spelling, and word formation. You can also create your own word games by asking your child to come up with words that rhyme or start with a certain letter.

5. Cook Together: Cooking together is a fun and engaging way to promote literacy skills and teach your child about healthy eating. Read recipes together, measure ingredients, and discuss the steps involved in cooking. This activity promotes sequencing skills, following directions, and vocabulary development.

6. Create a Reading Nook: Designate a special reading area in your home that is comfortable and inviting. Use soft pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals to create a cozy atmosphere. Encourage your child to read in the nook and add new books to the area on a regular basis.

7. Listen to Audiobooks: Audiobooks are a great way to promote literacy skills and keep your child engaged in learning while on-the-go. Choose audiobooks that are age-appropriate and that your child is interested in. You can listen to audiobooks in the car, during meal times, or at bedtime.
